Facebook has blocked the user accounts with the surname ‘Chutia’ believing the accounts to be fake and fabricated. This has irked the All Assam Chutia Students’ Union(Aacsu) as thousands of Chutia community subscribers’ accounts were blocked by the social networking giant.
Chutia, pronounced as Sutiya, is a community in Assam while the word is a commonly-used derogatory term in Hindi.
The general secretary of Aacsu, Jyotiprasad Chutia, stated that all the accounts belonging to the Chutia community of Assam were blocked by Facebook as they believed the names to be false and fabricated.
The Facebook authorities thought that the account holders are fake and fabricated as ‘Chutia’ is an abusive word in the Hindi language.
The association stated that the Facebook authority is still unknown to the fact that Chutia is an ethnic tribe of Assam which has a rich historical background in the state history.
The students protested against Facebook by burning an effigy of the social networking site in five Assam districts as part of a wider campaign.
Facebook, along with Google+ and other social networks, insists that users register with their real name as they will take action against anyone using a fake name.
